World Rowing Junior Championships
August 4th - 7th 2011 at Eton Dorney, near Windsor

The first FISA Junior Regatta for men was held in 1967 and women were included eight years later following on the heels of women’s rowing being added to the Olympic Games in 1976. Traditionally just under 50 nations take part in the championships with close to 600 juniors competing. There’s no doubt the Junior Champs are exciting. There is a spirit of youthful exuberance that cannot be faked. It’s the unrestrained display of joy as athletes win their races. It’s also the absolute devastation on the faces and words from the mouths of those who lose. It’s the family that travels - sometimes thousands of miles – to unite behind their siblings. It’s the tears shed by joyous coaches. It’s the absolute determination by parents to make sure they see it all. The World Rowing Junior Championships see the launch of a number of future stars. It’s the biggest regatta for juniors and most of the competitors row internationally for the first time. Junior rowing is boosted by the “one Euro per seat” collected at each FISA World Rowing Masters Regatta, which helps to run junior development programmes. CrowdThe 2011 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships include about 50 nations with close to 600 juniors competing, many of whom are future starts in the making.  They are being held at Eton Dorney, the course which was built by Eton College to accommodate school rowing and will host the Rowing and Canoe Sprint competitions for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Ben Hunt-Davis, winner of Olympic gold in the men's eight at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, has today been named by the Amateur Rowing Association (ARA) as Chairman of the organising committee for the 2011 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships.
The Championships are to be staged at Eton-Dorney, the rowing venue for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Hunt-Davis will team up with Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE, four times Olympic gold medallist, who is to be President of the event.

ARA Chairman Di Ellis said:  "I am absolutely delighted that Ben and Matt have agreed to lead the 2011 team. Having two Olympians committing to these key roles will give a huge boost to our volunteer legacy programme by maintaining the high expectations of the sport both in organising major events and our club infrastructure for the future.'

Hunt-Davis said: "It is a huge honour for me to be the Chairman of the FISA 2011 World Junior Rowing Championships. Rowing in Great Britain has a reputation and rich history in running excellent events including the FISA 2006 World Rowing Championships and the FISA 2005 World Cup when the Chairman Mike Baldwin and his committee set a gold standard in event organisation. I am confident that the fantastic team of highly experienced people who will be working with me can deliver an exceptional event on the chosen Olympic course of Eton Dorney".

Great Britain will host the World Rowing Junior Championships from 3rd to 6th August 2011.

The event will offer an exciting opportunity to see the rising stars of the future. 2008 Beijing Olympic medallists Matt Wells (Junior Gold, 1997), Debbie Flood (Junior Bronze, 1998),Natasha Page (Junior Silver, 2003) and Matt Langridge (Junior Gold, 2001) are just a few of Britain’s top senior rowers who have also represented GB at the World Junior Championships.

Around 50 nations, including more than 600 rowers aged 18 and under, are expected to attend the Eton event in 2011.

Ben Hunt-Davis

Ben Hunt-Davis rowed for Great Britain for almost a decade, competing at six World Championships and three Olympic Games. The highlight of his sporting career came at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 when he was a member of the Men's Eight that won the Gold Medal, becoming the first British winners of the event since 1912.
